Tennessee: Judges Have Given The Go-Ahead For The Start Of The School Year’s Voucher Program

A contentious school voucher program in Tennessee will be allowed to go forward, according to a panel of three judges, despite the fact that opponents will continue to challenge the proposal.

Nashville, Shelby County and families’ lawyers claimed in court on Friday that Tennessee authorities were operating in a “haphazard fashion” while implementing the voucher program and requested a block order to prevent the 2019 legislation from taking effect again.  Their request for an injunction was, however, dismissed by the justices.

Eligible families would be able to utilize up to $8,100 in public tax money for private school tuition and other pre-approved costs under a system called education savings accounts.
